Union of Roofers, Water Proofers, and Allied Workers Local 12
Local 12 was chartered on September 8, 1919. Its framed charter hangs on the wall in the office it rents at the building on Bernhard Road in North Haven, which is now owned by the Ironworkers. Currently, the Local has about 250 members, including about 100 apprentices. Its territory is essentially the lower third of the state of Connecticut, extending in a triangle from Madison to Kent to Greenwich. Prior to its recent move to this office, it had been located since 1994 in the now defunct 45 Water Street, which was owned by the New Haven Building Trades Council. Before that, its headquarters was in Bridgeport. When the move was made to its office in New Haven, a number of older records were scrapped. The Apprentice Coordinator keeps all current apprentice records, both in hard copy and on computer. All other records of the Local are kept in the office of Harold Davidson, the Business Manager, Financial Secretary, and Treasurer, or in a storage facility in West Haven. Davidson says that the most important event in the Local’s history was the election in 1933 of Local member Jasper McLevy, a roofer, as mayor of Bridgeport. “It was time for a working class person to become Mayor,” he says. Its greatest success has been its growth from 84 members in 1994 to its current 250. Its most pressing concerns today are the prevalence of non-union shops, and the subsequent decline in wages, benefits, and working conditions. THE RECORDS: A BRIEF INVENTORY The important current and older records are located in three file cabinets of four drawers each. They include:
Member records have been kept on computer since 1991 but these are also duplicated in hard copy. The storage facility in West Haven houses records of members now deceased or inactive dating back to the 1960s, as well as older photographs. While still at Water Street, the Local maintained records of Executive Board and Regular Membership Meetings and correspondence going back to the 1980s . All older records of this type had been disposed of; and, since the move from Water Street, Mr. Davidson is not sure where the more recent ones are located. CONTACT: Harold F.
